Anti-Sweating Injections
Excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) of the armpits can be treated with the same injections that are used to relax facial muscles for wrinkle removal. The injection medicine contains a natural protein that blocks the release of a chemical that causes sweating. The dermatologist uses a very fine needle to inject this medicine into the armpit area. The procedure can be done in the doctor’s office and usually takes approximately 20 minutes.
These injections have been shown to be effective in 95% of patients with excessive underarm sweating, and one treatment may last for 6–9 months. After the injection it will take about 7–14 days for the treatment to take full effect.
For people with excessive underarm sweating who have failed treatment with Driclor deodorant, a Medicare rebate may be available for one brand of these anti-sweating injections when the procedure is performed by a Medicare-approved specialist.
